There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.

Kofi Annan

Women's empowerment has become a significant topic of discussion in development and economics. It can also point to approaches regarding other trivialized genders in a particular political or social context.

The persisting subordination of women in India was brought out by the report of the Committee on the Status of Women in India (CSWI) published in 1975. The report broke the myth of women’s equality which prevailed during the post Independence years. There are many factors contributing subordination of women. The status of women in Odisha is a complex issue and with many intricate factors of which only some have been addressed by SOVA.

Capacity building of Women of Minority Communities

Women in India, in general, continue to suffer discrimination, harassment and violence, women belonging to minority communities suffer additional disadvantage owing to their minority status and lack of proper representation. This is more so with Muslim women, who are besieged with poverty, patriarchy and religious restrictions, affecting their socio-economic status. Muslim women are discouraged from taking up secular education and gainful employment in the contemporary society. An added dimension is the biased bureaucracy, which has been thwarting the aspirations of women belonging to minority communities, which denies them of the benefits extended by the government.

SOVA is supported by the Ministry of Minority Development to build capacities of the women belonging to minority communities. SOVA holds camps to educate the women on various developmental aspects which include governmental policies, schemes and procedures.

Advocacy on Women Empowerment and Child Rights

While taking measures for women empowerment, women must be largely associated with the programmes. Women collectives must be taken into action while interventions are proposed.

SOVA thrives to empower women and ensure rights of the children. It advocates and champions the cause of equity, social justice for women in every sphere, thrives to see every children having equal opportunities to grow with their rights. It organizes seminars, conferences to identify issues, means and modalities to address them and see that the outcomes of such events bear desired fruit.
